POSTGRADUATE PROGRAM (MSc)
“Geographic Information Systems”
ACADEMIC YEAR 2026-2027

The Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the School of Science of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), in accordance with the University Senate decision dated 27-10-2021, has established and operates the English-taught Postgraduate Program (MSc) entitled “Geographic Information Systems” since the academic year 2022-2023.

During the 18th Meeting of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment for the Academic Year 2025-2026, held on 30-04-2026, it was unanimously decided to issue the Call for Applications for the MSc “Geographic Information Systems” for the Academic Year 2026-27, as follows:

The Program awards a Master of Science (MSc) in “Geographic Information Systems.”

1. Eligible Candidates
The MSc “Geographic Information Systems” accepts holders of a first-cycle degree (Bachelor’s) from Greek Universities or recognized equivalent foreign institutions (recognized by DOATAP/Hellenic NARIC). The program is primarily addressed to graduates of Schools of Science, Engineering, Geography, Agriculture, Health Sciences, Archaeology, and Economics.

2. Number of Positions
The number of students admitted per academic year is set at fifty (50). Additionally, members of the EEP, EDIP, and ETET categories may be admitted as supernumeraries in accordance with paragraph 8 of Article 34 of Law 4485/2017.

3. Application Procedure
Candidates are invited to complete and submit their application and the required supporting documents electronically to the Secretariat of the MSc “Geographic Information Systems.”

Required Documents:
1. Application Form
2. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
3. Certified Copy of Degree, Certificate of Completion of Studies, or Transcript of Records (if the first-cycle degree has not yet been completed).
4. Copy of Identity Card (ID) or Passport (both sides).
5. Two (2) Letters of Recommendation.
6. Certificate of English Proficiency (Level B2 or higher). All recognized English language certificates are accepted. Degrees from English-speaking universities or transcripts showing English language courses are also accepted.
7. Publications in scientific journals or peer-reviewed conferences (if available).
8. Evidence of professional or research activity (if available).
9. Certificate of work experience (if available).
10. Recognition of equivalence from DOATAP (Hellenic NARIC) for holders of degrees from foreign institutions.
11. For final-year students: Those expecting to graduate by the application deadline must submit their Transcript of Records and a Formal Declaration stating they are in their final year and will submit their certificate of completion to the Secretariat before the start of the Program.

4. Application Deadline
Applications will be accepted from Monday, May 18, 2026, until Friday, September 11, 2026. Any decision by the Steering Committee (S.C.) to extend the deadline will be announced on the website (https://gis.geol.uoa.gr/) and the DIAVGEIA portal.

Note: Applications are reviewed by the Steering Committee in order of their protocol number. The Steering Committee reserves the right to close the application period earlier if the number of admitted students is reached before the deadline.

5. Selection Process
The selection of students is conductεd by the Steering Committee and ratified by the Assembly of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment. The committee submits an evaluation ranking list based on the following criteria:

A. Primary Criteria:
• Degree grade (or current GPA for final-year students).
• Average grade in five (5) undergraduate courses related to the subject of the MSc.
• Performance in the Undergraduate Thesis or Internship (where applicable).
• Certified knowledge of English (Level B2 or higher).
• Recommendation Letters.

B Secondary Criteria:
• Research or relevant professional activity.
• Scientific publications.
• Possession of a second undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

In the event of a tie, candidates are admitted at a rate not exceeding 10% of the maximum intake. Selected candidates will be notified of their acceptance via email. Rejected applicants will also be notified via email, stating the specific reasons for rejection.

6. Tuition Fees
The tuition fees for the MSc “Geographic Information Systems” total €5,000. Payment is scheduled as follows:

  • €2,500: Two weeks before the start of the 1st Semester.
  • €1,500: Two weeks before the start of the 2nd Semester.
  • €1,000: Two weeks before the start of the 3rd Semester.

7. Tuition Fee Waivers
Applications for tuition fee waivers (pursuant to Law 4485/2017) are submitted after the selection process is completed and the names of the selected students have been posted on the DIAVGEIA portal. The timeline and procedure will be announced on the program’s website. The process follows the provisions of Government Gazette 799/B/23-02-2022.

8. Objections/Appeals
Rejected applicants have the right to file an objection and request a re-evaluation of their application within five (5) working days from the date they receive the rejection email. Objections must be submitted to the Secretariat via email (gis@geol.uoa.gr).
