The Departments of:

  1. “Economics and Sustainable Development” and “Geography” of Harokopio University of Athens,
  2. the “Department of Business Administration” of the University of the Aegean
  3. and the «Institut de Recherche et d’ Etudes Supérieures du Tourisme» of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University (IREST),

have decided and invite the interested parties until April 19th 2026 to apply for the International Master Programme (MSc) entitled "Sustainable Tourism Development: Heritage, Environment, Society".

The Master’s Programme is a double degree full-time programme made up of two (2) academic semesters (12 months) that results in the award of two separate degrees to the student. These degrees are:

  1. Master in Tourism "Sustainable Tourism Development: Heritage, Environment, Society" of Harokopio University of Athens and the University of the Aegean.
  2. Master Tourism, mention “Sustainable Tourism Development: Heritage, Environment, Society” from Paris 1, France;

The diploma that students may receive at the partner institution and the one they receive at the home institution are two separate and independent degrees.

The Programme focuses on the provision of high-level qualifications for professions related to Sustainable Tourism Development and Interpretation and Management of Heritage. The subject of the Master's Programme is the provision of specialized studies in the scientific field of Sustainable Tourism Development through Heritage.

The Programme aims to provide high-level academic and professional qualifications in areas related to Sustainable Tourism Development and the Interpretation and Management of Heritage. The MSc offers in-depth interdisciplinary training at the intersection of tourism, cultural heritage, and sustainability.

Tuition fees:

The Master’s Programme is self-financed. Each participant pays directly to Harokopio University of Athens the amount of 3.900€ [1], in three (03) predetermined installments.

Structure of the Programme:

Lectures are held by professors of Harokopio University of Athens, of the University of the Aegean and of IREST- Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne Universite, as well as by invited speakers who may be academics, researchers or professionals. All courses are taught in English and are held at Harokopio University of Athens. However, students who are residents abroad of Greece may request to participate online, provided they submit a well-founded and explicit request. Each request will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the programme’s Curriculum Committee.

The Master’s Programme will begin in the winter semester of the academic year 2026-2027. The attendance will be two to three afternons a week (Monday to Friday).

  • Economics of Tourism (5 ECTS)
  • Research Methods (5 ECTS)
  • Sustainable Tourism (5 ECTS)
  • Heritage Management (5 ECTS)
  • Heritage Marketing (5 ECTS)

Total of ECTS Credits 1st Semester 30 ECTS

2nd Semester

  • Tourism Development Plans (5 ECTS)
  • Destination Management (5 ECTS)
  • Heritage & Cultural Tourism (5 ECTS)
  • Empirical Project or Internship (5 ECTS)
  • Thesis (10 ECTS)

Total of ECTS Credits 2nd Semester 30 ECTS

Target Groups of applicants:

Access to the Master’s Programme is reserved to students who hold:

  • a Greek national diploma conferring the degree of Bachelor in a subject area compatible with that of the Master's Degree, and in particular but not exclusively: tourism studies, geography, sociology, economics, management, environmental studies, cultural studies, human and social sciences, engineering and law;
  • a French national diploma conferring the grade of Master 1 in a subject area compatible with that of the Master's degree, in particular but not exclusively: tourism studies, geography, sociology, economics, management, environmental studies, cultural studies, human and social sciences, engineering and law.

Graduates holding a national degree from a university in a country other than Greece and France must obtain either validation or their degree must be included in the National Registries (see additional details at the end of the document)

Selection process of applicants:

The selection process of applicants involves the following steps:
a. Application Folder
b. Screening and pre-selection
c. Interview
d. Assessment
e. Decision

Candidates are pre-selected on the basis of the application folder based on criteria such as the Bachelor’s Degree grade, the level of English language knowledge, the possession of other Postgraduate Degrees, the professional and research experience in the field of tourism or in cultural institutions, the publications in scientific journals and/or in conference proceedings.

Pre-selected candidates will be invited to an interview. Upon completion of the interview process, the final candidates to be admitted to the Master’s Programme will be selected. It is noted that a total of sixty (60) applicants will be accepted.

  • a two-sided copy of the candidate’s ID (or passport);
  • a detailed curriculum vitae;
  • a copy of the candidate’s Undergraduate Degree certificate, with recognition of the Hellenic National Academic Recognition Information Center (NARIC - in Greek ΔΟΑΤΑΠ) for Degrees awarded by a foreign University (recognition is not required for French national diplomas conferring the grade of Master 1). The relevant equivalence may be submitted after the enrollment of the candidate in the Master’s Programme, but definitely before the completion of his/her studies and the award of the Postgraduate Degree;
  • certificate of studies with a Transcript of Records (TOR) of all undergraduate courses and the bachelor’s thesis;
  • other copies of University or Technological Educational Institute Degrees and copies of Postgraduate Degrees (if any);
  • certified copies of language certificates;
  • copies of certificates of attendance of educational or training programmes (if any);
  • employment experience certificates (if any);
  • letters of recommendation (with the name, title, position, address and telephone of the author; at least one out of two letters of recommendation may be written by an academic professor). Letters of recommendation can be submitted electronically by the referees to the following email address: tourher@hua.gr

Additional Details:

Graduates holding a national degree from a university in a country other than Greece and France must obtain either validation or their degree must be included in the National Registry of Foreign Recognized Academic Title Types and the University issuing the degree must be included in the National Registry of Foreign Recognized Higher Education Institutes: https://www.mitroa.doatap.gr/.

A Certificate of Place of Study is additionally required. This certificate shall be issued and dispatched by the institution where the studies were conducted.

If the Hellenic Territory is certified as the place of study (or part thereof), the degree shall not be recognized, unless the portion of studies conducted within the Hellenic Territory took place at a public domestic Higher Education Institution.
