Εθνικό και Καποδιστριακό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών: MSc in Archaeological Science (2024-2025)

The application period for the academic year 2024-25 is between May 15th 2024 and June 14th 2024.

ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS
The program is addressed to:

► holders of BA in archaeology, humanities and classics wishing to learn how to apply science-based approaches to the study of archaeological evidence, including the environment and the material culture of the past

► holders of BA or BSc in science, such as geology, physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, and conservation of antiquities and works of art, wishing to learn archaeological research issues and questions, which can be approached through scientific methods of analysis.

The maximum number of students accepted each year is twenty (20).

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Within equal opportunities policies, applications will be assessed in the light of the following criteria:

  • The BA degree in archaeology, classics or relevant subjects, or a BSc in geosciences or relevant subjects, preferably upper-second (B+), followed by a full transcript of records. All documents must be officially translated in English and validated by an appropriate authority.
  • The academic, research and professional achievements of the candidates according to their CVs
  • Two academic references providing assessments of the applicant’s academic achievement and ability for graduate study and research.
  • The Personal Statement (max. 1000 words) by the applicant outlining academic achievements and ambitions.
  • The performance in the online interview

If English is not the applicant’s first language, proficiency must be demonstrated by means of an internationally recognised test, with the following results:
► ITOEFL: Overall score of 88 or above, with at least 17 in Listening, 17 in Writing, 18 in Reading and 20 in Speaking.

► IELTS: Overall score of 6.5 or above, with at least 5.5 in each component.

► CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages): at least Level B2

APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Step 1: Submit your application
In order to submit your application successfully, you should send the following documents to the email address of the program (archaeoscience@arch.uoa.gr) in the period 15/5/2024-14/6/2024:

  1. A pdf copy of you application (you may download it from here)
  2. A pdf copy of your National ID and/or Passport
  3. A pdf copy of your Curriculum Vitae
  4. A pdf copy of your undergraduate (BA/BSc) degree, which (if applicable) should be followed by a Greek or English translation. In case the undergraduate degree has not been issued yet, you may submit a certification of completion of studies.
  5. A pdf copy of two academic references providing assessments of the applicant’s academic achievement and ability for graduate study and research.
  6. A pdf copy of your personal statement (max. 1000 words) outlining your academic achievements and your reasons for wishing to enroll in the program.
  7. A pdf copy of your proficiency in English.
  8. A pdf copy of your publications (if mentioned in the CV)
  9. A pdf copy of documents certifying your working experience and/or research activity (if mentioned in the CV)
  10. A pdf copy of any documents certifying claims made in the CV

If you are a last year undergraduate student, you may not have your degree in hand yet. You will still receive an offer as described in Step 3, on the condition that you will produce your certified degree before you enroll.

The Admission Office will then check your credential, assess your overall grade, inform you about your eligibility for admission to the program, and perhaps suggest additional steps you could take to meet the admission requirements.

On the basis of the criteria of assessment, the Admission Committee will announce the final results by the end of June 2024.

Step 2: Receive an offer
After completing Step 1 you will receive an uncoditional offer (if you already have a degree) or a conditional offer (if you do not have your degree in hand, yet). The result will be announced by the end of June 2024. Then, you will be ready to apply for a student visa in your country (if applicable).

Step 3: Pay the tuition fees
You will instructed to pay the first installment of 2500 euros to the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens by the middle of September 2024.

CRITERIA OF ASSESSMENT

Within equal opportunities policies, applications will be assessed by the members of the Admission Committee on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Academic performance during undergraduate studies, as evidenced by the BA/BSc degree and the Transcript of Records
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Academic references
  • Personal statement
  • Scientific publications, if any
  • Working and/or research experience (if any), as certified by appropriate documents
  • Online oral interview

If English is not the applicant’s first language, proficiency must be demonstrated by means of an internationally recognized test, with the following results:
ITOEFL: Overall score of 88 or above, with at least 17 in Listening, 17 in Writing, 18 in Reading and 20 in Speaking.
IELTS: Overall score of 6.5 or above, with at least 5.5 in each component.
For students from Greece and other EU countries who follow the CEFR system (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), a diploma of Level B2 (at least) is also accepted.

TUITION FEES
The total cost of the program is 6.000 Euros.

This includes tuition fees, educational fieldtrips and costs for the use of the necessary laboratory equipment during both the taught modules and the writing of the MSc thesis.

In order to secure a place in the program the first fee instalment (2500 euros) must be deposited until 31 August. The second instalment (2500 Euros) is due until 31 January. The third, and final, instalment is due until 30 June next year.
