THE PROGRAMME EMPLOYS A HYBRID TEACHING SCHEME WHICH ALLOWS FOR ATTENDANCE OF LECTURES BY EITHER PHYSICAL PRESENCE OR FULL ONLINE DISTANCE LEARNING OR BOTH

The Department of International and European Studies and the Department of Economics invite applications for their Postgraduate Programme leading to a Master of Science Degree in Sea Shipping and Sea Transports: Economics and Politics.

The aim of the Programme is to provide a high quality educational opportunity to its students, an opportunity based on exploring breakthrough topics of political and economic nature in the areas of international shipping and sea transport, on gaining in-depth knowledge from practitioners in the field, on developing skills for future internship and career opportunities and on acquiring an excellent intellectual foundation for any career they wish to pursue.

Prospective employers include shipping companies in Greece and abroad, companies involved in maritime business in Greece and abroad, public and private port authorities, public authorities and local government authorities involved in maritime affairs and sea transports. People already employed in these fields may also benefit from attending this Programme in terms of knowledge as well as opportunities for professional advancement. Finally, the Programme will prove indispensible to those contemplating a career change or wish to pursue a PhD in the relevant fields.

The Programme entails two strands, each specialized in one of the two key areas of global maritime trade: a) Shipping and Maritime Transport Economics and b) International Politics of Shipping and Maritime Transport. Therefore the courses of the Programme come from the academic disciplines of Economics of Shipping and Sea Transport, Logistics and International Relations.

The time frame of the Programme consists of three semesters, two of which involve class attendance, while the third one is dedicated to the implementation of the internship and to the writing of a dissertation. The MSc in Sea Shipping and Sea Transports: Economics and Politics is designed to offer a blended learning teaching method that combines the following ways to learn:

  • Core, synchronous, weekly sessions.  Each of our courses comprises core, weekly, synchronous learning where you join other students and the course tutor in the class.
  • For online attendance there is an online Zoom ‘virtual classroom’ that you are able to join from everywhere.

Thus, there is a hybrid teaching scheme which involves in person (physical presence) and online attendance of the lectures for the entire duration of the Programme.

All courses are taught in English.

The Structure of the Programme is as follows:

1st Semester (All courses are obligatory)

  • Sea Transport and Shipping Services  Management (7,5 ECTS)
  • Sea Transport and Shipping Economics (7,5 ECTS)
  • Maritime Policy, Governance and Regulation (7,5 ECTS)
  • International Relations and Politics in Shipping and Sea Transport (7,5 ECTS)

2nd Semester (2 obligatory courses and 2 elective courses for each strand)

Strand: Economics of Shipping and Sea Transports

  • Shipping Investment and Finance (7,5 ECTS)
  • Quantitative Methods in Shipping and Sea Transportation Economics (7,5 ECTS)
  • Elective Course (7,5 ECTS)
  • Elective Course (7,5 ECTS)

Strand: International Politics of Shipping and Sea Transport

  • Law of the Sea-Shipping Law (7,5 ECTS)
  • Crisis Management, Negotiations and Security (7,5 ECTS)
  • Elective Course (7,5 ECTS)
  • Elective Course (7,5 ECTS)

Elective Courses  (In addition to the following elective courses, one of the compulsory courses of each strand of study may be selected as elective course in the context of the other strand of study)

  • Global Supply Chain Management
  • Port Economics and Policy
  • Regional Aspects of International Relations in Shipping and Sea Transport: Asia and Africa
  • Marine Insurance

3rd Semester

  • Internship (10 ECTS)
  • Dissertation (20 ECTS)

Tuition fees: 5.500 €, payable in four installments. Scholarships and fee waivers are available.

Applicants must be University graduates, have excellent knowledge of the English language certified by Cambridge or Michigan Proficiency or English speaking university degree or by a minimum TOEFL score of 96 (TOEFL Internet BasedTest) or 243 (TOEFL Computer Based Test) or by a minimum IELTS score of 7.5.

Other language certificates will be considered pursuant to the Greek legislation.

Additional qualifications, such as job experience or additional languages and degrees, although not required, will be taken into consideration. Following an initial selection, the selected candidates will be contacted (therefore your phone number and your e-mail address must be provided along with the application) in order to be interviewed either in person or via the teleconference platform ZOOM.

Students from non-EU countries may need a student visa. Please inquire at the Greek consular authorities and apply early enough for the completion of this process prior to the beginning of classes.

Applications will be processed as soon as they are received and places in the Programme will be offered within a short period of time. Applicants are advised to apply early to ensure a place in the Programme. The classes will begin in October 2026.
