General Description of the Project

The Department of Hygiene and Epidemiology at the University of Ioannina invites applications for an Academic Fellow.

The post is embedded in the project “Certification of Causes of Death in Europe (CODA-EU)” funded by the European Union (Erasmus+). The main goals of the project is to provide an innovative learning tool (CODA) for lecturers training medical students, giving them the opportunity to improve their knowledge and practical skills on WHO’s recommendations and rules concerning the certification of causes of death, and to create a MOOC dedicated to trainers and professors of various universities and institutes who wish to adapt the CODA tool for their teaching purposes and share it with their students.

The Fellows will also get involved in other exciting research initiatives within the Department including projects in clinical, molecular and environmental epidemiology and systematic reviews which offer the opportunity for meaningful professional growth, mentoring, and achievement. The grant supports opportunities for networking activities and collaboration with various European research groups.
General Description of the Department

The Department of Hygiene and Epidemiology was founded in 1979 and its internationally-recognized expertise is on research methodology, evaluation of epidemiologic bias and evidence synthesis methods (www.dhe.med.uoi.gr ). The citation impact of the department’s publications is among the highest in Europe across any scientific discipline. There are currently five faculty members working in the Department and approximately 20 research or clinical fellows at various levels in their careers.

Qualifications

  • Applicants should have a degree in medicine and good methodological and epidemiological skills. Clinical experience is an advantage as well as a Masters in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health or equivalent. Applicants should also have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. The post holder is expected to create the CODA tool exercises including exercises to indicate errors in incorrectly filled in death certificates and to suggest corrections, as well as exercises presenting (hypothetical) lethal conditions and asking to fill in a death certificate. Moreover, the post holder is expected to complete the Greek translation of the 4 e-learning modules of the project (Introduction, Cause-of-death statistics in national statistical systems and in health policies, CODA tool exercises, and Upcoming changes in the 11th ICD revision).

Duration of the post: 3 months full time (starting October 1, 2020) and then 30 months part-time (10%) with a net salary of 1,000 euros per month.
